ACM 220 — Animal Law and Welfare
/3 clock hours This course provides an overview of federal and Maine state laws that protect domestic species, food animals, research animals, and wildlife. The course will also examine specific welfare laws in place for common species seen in New England. Students will learn about the Animal Welfare Act and Regulations set in place by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) for several species including dogs, cats, food animals, horses, and wildlife. The course examines some species not protected by common federal and state laws and the welfare concerns for those unprotected species. Students will have the opportunity to research and discuss with classmates emerging animal welfare cases that have appeared in recent news. Core fulfilled: None
