HSTR 360 — Cold War Europe: 3 Credits ()
(F) This class explores the cultural, diplomatic, and political history of Eastern Europe during the Cold War era (1945-1989). Beginning with a discussion of the region’s imperial past, we then examine the political conditions surrounding Eastern Europe during the interwar years. Whereas the Cold War is typically thought of in terms of a single era, we discover that there were actually several eras taking place in the region within this time period. We also see that relations between the Soviet Union and its Eastern European satellites (and non-satellites) were not always so simple. This course goes up to the present day, underscoring the historical roots of the region’s contemporary issues and concerns involving the European Union, NATO, and relations with Russia
