HIST 104 — History of the African American Experience: Reconstruction to the Present

Previously HIST 142. This course will explore the African American experience in the United States from the period following the Civil War to the present. It will emphasize topics such as Jim Crow segregation, the Harlem and Chicago Renaissances, the Civil Rights era, Black Power, and modern black political movements, and particular attention will be given to the themes of resistance, education, culture, migration, and politics within the context of Pan-Africanism.

Prerequisites: ENGL 121
