HIS7512 — Vietnam: History and Culture
Students will encounter and experience the dramatic changes felt by 20th century Vietnam. Through visiting cultural and historical sites in northern Vietnam, students will learn the complex history and effects of French colonialism and 20th century communism. In addition, students will learn to speak basic Vietnamese and have the opportunity to interact with the fascinating, ancient culture all around them. Course requires travel over January break. This course will include one or two pre-field sessions in the month prior to travel to prepare students with the historical context and background needed to understand what they will experience. To be approved for this travel course, interested students will provide an application essay and will interview with the instructor. Instructor approval will be required on both of these elements. No requisites. J, Fall.
