MAT2014 — HONORS SYM-Disinformation Age

This course will look at the ways that statistics are presented for public consumption, both numerically and graphically. Of specific focus will be statistics that may be misleading or misinterpreted and the ethical concerns related to relaying such data. Students will learn basic statistical concepts in order to evaluate information presented in the media. Students will learn about reliable sources of statistical data, proper interpretations of statistics, and why certain statistical values are more useful for comparison (i.e. median compared to mean). Students will look at data presented in any discipline, analyze and evaluate the statistics given, and discuss why the information was provided in that manner.
