Historical study of Hollywood film genres and their relation to dichotomous gender. Emphasis on the genres of screwball comedy, maternal melodrama and film noir. Advanced readings in gender-analysis and film-studies scholarship. Representative directors include Pabst, Hawks, Sturgess, Rapper, Dmytryk, Ray, Hitchcock and Aldrich.
