MAT-1130 — Mathematical Ideas
This course equips students with practical math skills to solve everyday problems using quantitative methods, ideal for those in non-STEM related academic programs. Students apply formal logic to assess arguments and learn to organize and interpret data through set theory and descriptive statistics. Students also evaluate risk using probability and apply mathematical concepts to real-life situations such as personal finance, voting, and apportionment. Technology is integrated into problem-solving across all topics throughout this course. Designed as a terminal course, it provides valuable mathematical tools but does not prepare students for algebra, trigonometry, science, engineering, or business courses. Analyze the validity of statements and arguments using formal logic. Apply appropriate formulas and technology to problems involving personal finances. Calculate basic and conditional probabilities, odds and expected values. Interpret quantitative and qualitative data using descriptive statistics. Apply appropriate formulas and technology to examine voting and apportionment methods.
